Bullishness.com's Monetization Strategy

The most frequent question I get about this site is: "How does it make money?". I know I have the option of inserting ads and affiliate links into the site, but I have chosen not to for the time being. Bullishness.com has not brought in a single penny, but it is paying off in other ways, and that's what I want to talk about today.

I started building this site on my own as a quick two week project over the summer and it turned out to be a lot bigger than I had planned. The programming aspect works my technical side while the design and writing aspects work my creative side. Because I can switch between technical and creative work on a dime, I never get too bogged down and can always start fresh on something new. I will monetize the site later on, but it is rewarding enough just to work on the site without getting paid for it.

And while Bullishness.com doesn't make any money directly, it has been paying off for me in a big way. My background is in engineering, but I'm in school now to get a job in what has become a fairly competitive field since the financial meltdown of October 2008. Because I don't have any financial training or experience, with the encouragement from a friend, I decided to put Bullishness.com on my resume. A couple weeks ago, I interviewed for an internship with a big insurance company and the thing they seemed to like the most about me was this site. I thought it would help, but I really didn't expect them to think so highly of it.

Fortunately, I was given an offer for the internship, which will start in a couple months. I've been getting by on student loans for the past few months, and having a full time internship will help pay for my school and living expenses, which I am extremely happy for. Although Bullishness.com wasn't the sole reason why I landed this internship, I know it played an important role, and that's how Bullishness.com is paying off for me. It's not being monetized directly, but there are side benefits to working on this site.

The bottom line is that I have a lot of enthusiasm and passion for this site and I also have nothing to lose by building it up. My development costs are nil, I don't need to make any income off of this site, and I actually enjoy working on it. I think this combination of factors will result in something really great. I am working on new features for this site that will make it, hopefully, more helpful and money saving for those who use it.

Happy trading!
